Labour Party gubernatorial candidate Olumide Akpata has asserted his independence from political godfathers, emphasizing that his loyalty lies solely with the people of Edo State. Speaking on Channels TV’s *Politics Today* on Thursday, Akpata affirmed that his commitment is to the electorate and not to any political benefactor.
Akpata emphasized, “One reason the people of Edo can trust the Labour Party government is that we are answerable only to them. I am not beholden to any godfather or political benefactor.”
Addressing speculation about his campaign’s funding, Akpata clarified that Governor Godwin Obaseki is not supporting his campaign financially. He rejected claims of sponsorship by Obaseki or the APC, calling such accusations “conspiracy theorizing.”
“I am funding my campaign myself, with the support of friends who believe in my vision for Edo State,” Akpata added.
