Last week, the Nigerian Navy (NN) successfully rescued 59 civilians from the dredging vessel MV AMBIKA 4, which was in danger of sinking in the turbulent Okpobo River in Bonny, Rivers State.
The operation, led by Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, lasted 10 hours. Despite the successful rescue of all 59 crew members, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza tragically lost his life during the mission.
The vessel, contracted by Sterling Global Oil Limited, was reported to be at risk of sinking near the river entrance, prompting a distress call to the Nigerian Navy around midnight on July 29. Due to the challenging conditions of the river, particularly during the rainy season, the Navy quickly mobilized a rescue team of 10 armed personnel in two Interceptor Boats.
Given the severity of the situation, the Navy also deployed additional resources including NNS GONGOLA, drones, and helicopters, including one from the Nigerian Air Force, to assist in the rescue.
During the operation, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza fell overboard and succumbed to the perilous conditions of the river.
Commodore Aiwiyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information (DINFO), confirmed the incident, expressing deep mourning for Gwaza’s sacrifice. “Lieutenant Commander Gwaza’s courageous efforts and ultimate sacrifice underscore the risks faced by Nigerian Navy personnel in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests. His dedication will be remembered with great respect,” he stated.
