Three small-scale miners lost their lives, and 11 others sustained injuries when a mining pit collapsed in Dan Kamfani, Anka Local Government of Zamfara State. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Thursday, as reported by an eyewitness who works in the area and requested anonymity.
Due to the pit’s depth of 275 meters, the exact number of casualties could not be confirmed. The eyewitness mentioned that the deceased individuals were from the Yar Tsabaya district in Anka LGA.
“The mining collapsed a few minutes before 4 p.m. on Thursday. We don’t know the exact number of people inside the mining pit, but three dead bodies were recovered, and 11 others are seriously wounded,” said the eyewitness.
The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Anka General Hospital. Zamfara State is known for its rich deposits of solid minerals, including gold, iron ore, limestone, and granite. However, illegal mining activities have been linked to banditry and other criminal activities in the region.
In response to these issues, the state governor, Dauda Lawal, issued a ban on illegal mining activities on September 23, instructing law enforcement officials to take stringent action against violators.
