A tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed the lives of 12 individuals on Tuesday, while four others sustained injuries. The incident occurred around 3:15 PM near Ogere and involved a single vehicle, a White Mazda Bus with registration number DDA733XA.
The crash was attributed to wrongful overtaking, which caused the bus to lose control, collide with the road divider, somersault, and then burst into flames.
Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the details in a statement to journalists. The injured were taken to Patmag Hospital in Ogere for treatment.
The statement revealed, “The rescue operation was conducted today, Tuesday, August 13, 2024, by a team from FRSC Ogere Unit Command on a crash that occurred at approximately 1514hrs. The crash involved a White Mazda Bus with registration number DDA733XA. A total of 16 people were on board, including 12 male adults, three female adults, and one female child.”
Tragically, 12 passengers were burned to death, while four male passengers were rescued with injuries.
Ogun State Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, expressed his sorrow over the incident and urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining safe speeds on highways and ensuring a clear path before overtaking. Fasakin also extended his sympathies to the injured, wishing them a swift recovery.
