The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has put a hold on the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), representing 11.92% of the 1,805,216 participants.
The 2024 WASSCE began on April 30 and concluded on June 24.
In a statement on Monday, Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria Office, explained that the results were withheld due to reported incidents of examination malpractice. He noted that this year’s figure is 4.37% lower than the 16.29% recorded for the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates.
Dangut emphasized WAEC’s commitment to addressing examination malpractice, criticizing the misuse of mobile phones in exam halls and organized cheating in some schools. He assured that ongoing investigations will be reviewed by the Council’s committee, which will make final decisions communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.
Candidates impacted by these decisions can seek redress via the WAEC website. Dangut also announced that 73.79% of candidates achieved credit or higher in at least five subjects, totaling 1,332,089 out of 1,805,216.
He encouraged candidates to check their results online and apply for Digital Certificates, which will be available within 48 hours. Results for candidates who have met their financial obligations will be accessible on the Council’s website within the next 12 hours, and Result Listings will be sent to schools soon.
The examination was administered across WAEC member countries: Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
