The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) are set to co-host the 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games from September 20 to September 29, 2024. This event, branded ‘Lagos 2024,’ will feature a grand opening ceremony at UNILAG’s Sports Center and a closing ceremony at LASU’s Ojo Campus.
During a press briefing at UNILAG’s Senate Building, Vice Chancellor Professor Folashade Ogunsola highlighted the importance of the games, noting their role in fostering unity, youth empowerment, and academic excellence across Africa. “The FASU Games are more than just a sports event; they represent a vision of unity and excellence that connects the continent’s youth,” she said.
The games will see 1,500 athletes and officials from 43 African countries competing in 17 different sports, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton, table tennis, swimming, taekwondo, judo, karate, cricket, hockey, chess, scrabble, and boxing.
UNILAG and LASU have made significant preparations for the event, including upgrading their sports facilities to meet international standards. “We have made sure all logistics are in place to ensure a smooth, secure, and exciting sports festival,” Professor Ogunsola added.
This year’s FASU Games will follow the successful hosting of the 26th Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA) by UNILAG two years ago, which was acclaimed as one of the best in NUGA history. UNILAG aims to build on that success and further showcase its dedication to sports excellence.
Professor Ogunsola encouraged athletes to compete with enthusiasm and integrity and invited sports fans and spectators to witness the event. The FASU Games will take place across UNILAG’s Akoka Campus and LASU’s Ojo Campus, reflecting the collaborative spirit of this year’s hosts.
