In the early hours of Sunday, April 6, 2025, Boko Haram terrorists launched an attack on a military formation in Izge village, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The assault, which began around 1:00 am, resulted in the deaths of a Nigerian Army captain and a corporal.
The insurgents initiated the attack using Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) targeting the platoon formation of Operation Hadin Kai troops stationed in Izge. A fierce gun battle ensued, lasting several hours. Community members, alongside vigilantes and local hunters, joined forces with the military to repel the attackers. While many terrorists were neutralized, the surviving assailants managed to evacuate the bodies of their fallen comrades as they retreated.
This incident follows closely on the heels of similar attacks in the region. Barely two weeks prior, Boko Haram militants raided military formations in Wajirko, Damboa Local Government Area, and Wulgo village in Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area, both in Borno State, resulting in significant casualties among the troops.
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, expressed deep concern over the persistent Boko Haram attacks in his constituency. He emphasized the need for the federal government to take decisive action by deploying advanced technological warfare tools, including drones, to support military and security agencies in ending the decade-long insurgency in the North East region.
Residents of Izge remain vigilant, with many continuing to search the surrounding areas for any remaining insurgents. The community’s resilience and collaboration with security forces have been pivotal in countering such attacks.
Izge village is situated approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Gwoza town, deep within the Sambisa Forest, a known stronghold of Boko Haram.
