Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 14% tariff on exports from Nigeria to the United States, marking a significant shift in bilateral trade relations. The decision, revealed during a “Make America Wealthy Again” event at the White House’s Rose Garden on Wednesday, aligns with Trump’s broader strategy to rebalance global trade and address what he describes as unfair practices.
The U.S. administration justified the move by citing an ongoing trade imbalance, pointing out that Nigeria imposes a 27% tariff on U.S. exports. Trump’s team argues that such disparities have harmed American businesses and consumers for years.
Beyond Nigeria, Trump unveiled a sweeping tariff policy that includes a baseline 10% tariff on all U.S. imports, affecting over 50 countries, including key economic players like China, the European Union, India, and Japan.
African nations were not spared from the policy shift. Several countries, including Algeria (30%), Lesotho (50%), Mauritius (40%), Kenya (10%), Namibia (21%), Ethiopia (10%), Ghana (10%), and South Africa (30%), will also face new tariff impositions.
During his speech, Trump emphasized that the policy aims to protect American industries and ensure global trade adheres to “fair” rules.
“This is one of the most important days in American history,” Trump declared. “We will supercharge our domestic industrial base, pry open foreign markets, and break down trade barriers. More production at home will lead to stronger competition and lower prices for consumers.”
The announcement has already triggered concerns among global markets, with analysts warning of rising trade tensions and the possibility of retaliatory measures from affected nations.
As the tariffs take immediate effect, observers anticipate diplomatic negotiations between Washington and its trade partners, including Nigeria, which may seek to mitigate the impact of the new levies.
