President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the importance of a verifiable identity for citizens to access essential services and exercise their basic rights. Speaking at the National Day of Identity, he highlighted that without proper identification, the government cannot effectively protect or provide for its citizens.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Tinubu stressed the role of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in enabling access to healthcare, education, financial inclusion, and social welfare. He linked the success of his administration’s 8-point agenda—focusing on food security, poverty eradication, economic growth, and security—to the digital identity system.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the need for accurate identity management to distinguish good citizens from criminals and enhance Nigeria’s global reputation. He emphasized that proper identity verification is crucial for governance, security, and sustainable development.
