The decisive moment came when the U.S. women’s basketball team clinched victory over host nation France in a thrilling finale, securing the last gold medal of the Games. Overall, the United States led the medal count with a total of 126 medals, while China finished with 91.
France, the host nation, earned 16 gold medals, placing fifth in the standings. Their overall tally of 64 medals marked the country’s best Olympic performance in more than a century.
As the Paris Summer Games drew to a close, the city handed over the Olympic baton to Los Angeles during a grand ceremony at the Stade de France national stadium. The event featured a star-studded lineup, highlighting Los Angeles’ plans to showcase its multiculturalism and the glitz of Hollywood at the LA28 Games.
Musicians and California natives Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and rapper Snoop Dogg, who has been contributing to NBC Primetime’s Olympic coverage, were among the performers at the closing ceremony.
LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman remarked, “This is the biggest moment in LA28 history to date, as the Olympic flag passes from Paris to LA.”
