The Rivers State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the recent post-election violence that resulted in multiple fatalities and the destruction of properties in three local government areas. Commissioner of Police Mustapha Mohammed announced the probe during a press briefing following his on-the-ground assessment of the affected regions on Wednesday.
In light of the violence that erupted after the Inspector General of Police ordered the reopening of the secretariats of the 23 local government areas, Mohammed stated that a high-powered investigation team has been established. This team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police from the State Criminal Investigation Department, will conduct a thorough inquiry, with findings set to be submitted to the Inspector General of Police.
To reassure residents of their safety, the police have commenced intensive patrols. Mohammed emphasized the importance of community cooperation, urging stakeholders and the public to collaborate with law enforcement to restore peace in the state. “We are conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and implementing proactive measures to ensure security in Rivers State,” he remarked.
He called for peace among stakeholders and reiterated the police’s commitment to investigating the incidents thoroughly.
