Prof. Oloyede Calls for Robust Defence of Press Freedom and Expression

-

Renowned journalism scholar, Prof. Bayo Oloyede, has urged the government and society to protect the rights to freedom of expression and press liberty, emphasizing their importance in sustaining democracy.

Speaking at the 15th Inaugural Lecture of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, titled “Journalism: A Fertiliser and Combustible for Human Rights Activism,” Oloyede highlighted how press freedom underpins democratic values. He warned that intolerance and repressive tendencies stifle dissent and media liberties.

Oloyede criticized societal justifications for repressing free expression, such as claims of preserving social order or safeguarding institutions, describing them as “flimsy reasons.” He also underscored the media’s critical role in governance as a watchdog, advocate for social justice, and shaper of public opinion.

Advocating for improved journalism training, Oloyede suggested that aspiring journalists should pursue a well-rounded education alongside specialized skills, including investigative techniques, critical thinking, and time management.

He paid homage to journalists like Dele Giwa and Bagauda Kaltho, who sacrificed their lives for press freedom. According to him, the protection of free expression is foundational to securing other human rights.

“There is a need to encourage the defence of press freedom and the liberty of expression,” Oloyede stated, adding that a nation’s press reflects the values upheld by its leaders and citizens.
