A coalition of concerned stakeholders under the Conference of Professionals in Peoples Democratic Party (CPDP) has urged party leaders and members to unite in order to prevent the party from imminent collapse.
The Protem National Coordinator of CPDP, Obinna Nwachukwu, made this appeal in Abuja, stating that an extensive review of the party’s affairs led to the decision to push for an all-inclusive intervention. He emphasized the urgent need for all PDP members and stakeholders to take collective action in preserving the party.
“As professionals and patriotic members of the PDP, we can no longer fold our arms while some professed members of our party, including those holding positions in the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, engage in actions that weaken the PDP,” Nwachukwu said.
He accused certain individuals of working against the party’s interests by fostering internal divisions, initiating litigations, and making inciting statements that threaten the party’s unity. He warned that such actions risk turning Nigeria into a one-party state under the APC.
The group further called for immediate measures to protect the PDP from external and internal sabotage, starting with the resignation or expulsion of members who hold positions in the APC government. Specifically, CPDP demanded that former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, resign from his APC appointment or face expulsion from the PDP.
“It is incongruous for an individual who claims to be a PDP member to simultaneously serve as a top cabinet minister in the APC government while promoting and defending its policies,” Nwachukwu stated. He argued that Wike’s position weakens the opposition’s credibility and emboldens party members to engage in anti-party activities.
The group also insisted that the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) must take immediate steps to revitalize the party by proceeding with the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on March 13, 2025. According to them, this meeting is crucial in providing party members with clarity on the way forward.
CPDP urged all members to set aside personal and sectional interests and uphold the party’s founding values of patriotism, party loyalty, and democratic principles.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the PDP as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, with the goal of reclaiming power from the APC in the 2027 elections.
