A large protest took place in Ogoniland as over 30 groups, including the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), demanded justice for Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni Eight, who were executed in 1995.
The protesters carried signs saying “Clear Ken Saro-Wiwa’s Name,” “No to Forceful Oil Resumption,” and “Stop the Ogoni Genocide.”
MOSOP President Fegalo Nsuke said no oil production would happen in Ogoni without their involvement.
“We will not accept any decision that ignores us,” Nsuke said. “We will fight for our rights.”
He called on President Bola Tinubu to stop the current oil resumption plans and include the Ogoni people in discussions.
The protesters demanded justice for Ken Saro-Wiwa by clearing his name instead of a pardon, indigenous Ogoni companies to manage oil production, splitting of OML 11 to allow local participation, compensation for Ogoni people for years of pollution, and an investigation into the killing of the Ogoni Four in Giokoo.
Barinuazor Emmanuel, leader of Ogoni youth, said they support oil production but only if the government listens to them.
“We want development, not exploitation,” he said. “Our voices must be heard.”
He also told former MOSOP leader Ledum Mitee to pick a side, saying, “You cannot serve two masters. Stand with the Ogoni people.”
The protest sends a clear message that Ogoni people will not allow oil resumption without their input.
