The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukayode, has expressed concern over the negative impact of nepotism, favouritism, and partisanship on Nigerian youths. He emphasized that these practices significantly hinder the opportunities for young people to succeed and express themselves.
Speaking at a Town Hall Meeting organized by the EFCC in Kano, Olukayode, who was represented by the Kano Commander, Ibrahim Shazali, said the theme of the event, “Uniting the Youths against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” highlights the urgent need for youths to unite in the fight against corruption. He pointed out that corruption affects every age group, but its impact is especially devastating for youths, stifling their potential and opportunities.
The EFCC Chairman stated, “Corruption affects every age group but bites harder against the prospects and possibilities of youths. This makes it more binding on young people to tackle it more fiercely than any other age group.”
Olukayode urged youths to collaborate for innovative, progressive changes, noting that such success cannot be achieved in a corrupt environment. He stressed the importance of a positive outlook and reform-minded pursuits, advising youths not to compromise their integrity in the face of corruption. He called on young people to take action by supporting anti-corruption efforts and exposing corrupt practices in their communities.
He concluded by highlighting that personal decisions to reject corruption are crucial. “No matter the structure any youth may want to form against corrupt practices, without a self-driven resolve to reject such practices, no other framework can work.”
The EFCC Chairman’s call for youth unity against corruption is a crucial step in fostering accountability and creating a more just society.
