The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have expressed outrage over their exclusion from key proceedings during the inauguration of the Renegotiation Committee for the 2009 Agreements with university-based unions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the unions condemned the event as biased toward the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). They criticized the invitation process, claiming it primarily referenced ASUU, neglecting the roles of NASU and SSANU.
The unions argued that the Minister of Education’s speech focused heavily on ASUU, sidelining other unions. They claimed their presence at the event was reduced to mere spectators, raising concerns about the fairness of future negotiations, particularly regarding non-teaching staff.
NASU and SSANU described the inauguration as an indication of potential bias favoring academic staff over non-teaching personnel, calling the process a “charade” and expressing serious misgivings about the fairness of the renegotiation process.
