At the 11th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games, key figures including the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Ewan, and Vice Chancellors from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) called on Nigerian and African youths to prioritize peace and unity.
The event drew participation from 11 African universities and 23 Nigerian institutions, alongside notable attendees such as the Egyptian Minister of Sports and FASU President, Dr. Ashraf Sobhy.
Ewan, represented by Lagos Liaison Officer Mrs. Nkana Mbora, encouraged the youth to view the games as a platform for collaboration rather than merely a competition for medals. He emphasized the importance of networking and fostering peace among nations.
Prof. Folasade Ogunsola of UNILAG highlighted the unique opportunity for participants to compete with an open mind, stressing the importance of showcasing their potential and unity. She noted the significance of co-hosting the games as a symbol of cooperation among diverse institutions.
Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello of LASU echoed these sentiments, reminding athletes to embody the spirit of sportsmanship and collaboration, rather than treating the competition as a high-stakes battle.
As the games officially opened, Dr. Sobhy urged athletes to demonstrate good sportsmanship and take pride in the progress of the FASU Games, which have been promoting unity since 1975. A total of 11 African nations are represented, with Nigeria hosting the largest contingent.
