Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, representing Cross River North Senatorial District, has firmly refuted claims of self-dealing and conflict of interest in relation to federal contracts awarded for constituency projects in his district.
In a statement on Monday, Senator Jarigbe described the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated, emphasizing that he has no direct or indirect financial interest in any company or agency involved in executing the projects. He stressed that he has never been a shareholder, director, or partner in any of the firms awarded contracts.
Addressing reports suggesting a link between his relatives and project contractors, the senator explained that private citizens, including family members of public officials, are legally allowed to participate in government procurement processes, provided they meet statutory requirements. He cited the Public Procurement Act (2007), which prohibits public officers from having personal interests in contracts to ensure transparency, but does not restrict qualified individuals from bidding for government work.
“Any insinuation that I unduly benefited from these awards is entirely baseless,” Jarigbe said. He urged the public and media to verify facts before reporting claims that could damage reputations.
The senator also highlighted broader concerns regarding the slow implementation of some constituency projects across the country, noting that discussions should focus on project execution and delivery, rather than speculation about who executed the works.
Community stakeholders and professional groups have publicly defended Senator Jarigbe, emphasizing his record of transparency and the tangible impact of projects in education, infrastructure, water supply, and empowerment initiatives within Cross River North.
