The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a ban on any celebrations marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day in the South East. In a statement on Monday, the separatist group warned that anyone participating in Independence Day events would be considered “an enemy of the land.”
IPOB urged the Igbo people to either carry on with their daily activities or stay at home but refrain from engaging in any event related to Nigeria’s Independence. The group emphasized that although the Igbo played a significant role in Nigeria’s fight for independence, the union with Nigeria has been harmful to their interests.
The statement from IPOB read: “The ban on the celebration of Nigeria’s October 1st Independence Day by Biafrans is still in force. Biafrans should avoid any Independence celebration globally. We reject the forced unity of Nigeria as we look forward to the restoration of Biafra.”
IPOB further called on parents and guardians to ensure their children do not attend any Independence Day events, asserting that they are closely monitoring activities across Biafraland.
This move underscores the growing tensions in the region as IPOB continues its campaign for the secession of Biafra from Nigeria.
