Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun has condemned police officers found protecting foreign hackers arrested for cybercrimes and national security threats. Following a recent investigation revealing that these suspects enjoyed police escorts, Egbetokun clarified that these officers were on illegal duty, not officially deployed by the police force.
Addressing the issue at a criminal investigation workshop, Egbetokun confirmed the detention of the implicated officers, whose unit commanders disowned their actions. He emphasized that while certain VIPs and business figures receive legitimate police protection, these instances of illegal escorting were unsanctioned and are being addressed.
Egbetokun also addressed the misuse of police escorts, warning that protection for VIPs could be revoked if misused. He additionally clarified that the police recently detained individuals involved in looting during protests, not peaceful protesters, countering the narrative that police targeted lawful demonstrators.
