Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has signed a bill into law that creates 83 new districts in the state, significantly expanding its traditional leadership structure. The new law repeals the old district system, responding to public demand across all 21 local government areas.
The move aims to reduce criminal activities in the state by improving governance and community representation. Governor Fintiri, during the signing ceremony at the Government House in Yola, emphasized that local government councils will now be responsible for the salaries of district heads and their staff. However, he assured that these salaries would be periodically reviewed to reflect economic realities.
The Adamawa State House of Assembly had previously passed the bill after adopting a report from the Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The largest number of new districts will be in Mayo-Belwa, Madagali, Demsa, and Hong, each with seven new districts. Other areas, including Fufore, Jada, and several local governments, will also see new districts, contributing to the state’s broader governance reform.
