Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has highlighted key weaknesses that could prevent Chelsea from winning the Premier League title this season.
According to Carragher, Chelsea lacks an elite goalkeeper and standout centre-backs—two vital components that successful title-winning teams typically possess.
After a thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, the Blues remain four points behind league leaders Liverpool. Despite scoring 35 goals this season—more than any other team—Chelsea has struggled defensively, conceding 18 goals in just 15 matches.
For Sunday’s match, Robert Sanchez started behind defenders Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill. However, Carragher expressed skepticism about their ability to secure the title with their current defensive setup.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said:
“I still look at the goalkeeper and two centre-backs, Badiashile who played today, and I just think I can’t see someone winning the Premier League with that goalkeeper and without a real standout centre-back.”
He further compared Chelsea’s situation to title-winning sides like Manchester City with Ederson and Ruben Dias or Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, stating that dominant teams are built on solid defensive foundations.
Carragher added:
“Those figures, you think, that you need to win a title, I still think Chelsea are a little bit short in those areas.”
Chelsea has work to do if they hope to bridge the gap at the top of the table and clinch their first league title in years.
