The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has expressed concern over the subdued atmosphere surrounding Nigeria’s upcoming Independence Day, citing the economic challenges facing the nation. Once a time of national pride and celebration, October 1 has now lost its enthusiasm as many Nigerians struggle with the realities of rising costs and poverty.
In a statement signed by its national secretary, Peter Ameh, CUPP emphasized that this year’s 64th anniversary is a stark reminder of unfulfilled promises and a call for transformative leadership. Ameh highlighted how staple foods like rice and garri have become luxuries for many, further straining household budgets. He noted that economic hardship, coupled with skyrocketing prices, has eroded the sense of national pride.
CUPP pointed to factors such as leadership incompetence, corruption, rising inflation, and currency devaluation as contributors to the current situation. With millions living below the poverty line, the coalition urged the government to take decisive action to address these issues and restore hope to the nation.
