The Benue State Government has unveiled plans to conduct a comprehensive livestock census aimed at curbing persistent clashes between farmers and herders, as well as tackling other livestock-related crimes.
Dr. Aondoaka Asambe, Principal Special Assistant to the State Governor on Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Disease Control, announced the initiative on Monday during an inspection of abattoirs and livestock markets in Makurdi.
“The livestock census will provide detailed data on animals and their owners across the state. This initiative is a crucial step towards addressing recurring farmer-herder conflicts and reducing cattle rustling,” Dr. Asambe explained.
According to him, the census will also involve tagging animals, making them easily traceable to their owners. This tagging system will be extended to abattoirs to enhance transparency and combat crime in the livestock industry.
Dr. Asambe emphasized that the census is part of a broader strategy to revitalize Benue’s livestock sector and boost its economic contributions. In the short term, the government will register livestock farmers, hatcheries, and feed mills to meet local consumption demands. Long-term goals include improving livestock production with enhanced breeds and reviving existing establishments.
The inspection also revealed the deplorable state of abattoirs in Makurdi, with significant deficiencies in hygiene, potable water, and road access.
Responding to the concerns, the Chairman of the Meat Shop Owners Association, Makurdi branch, Mr. Austin Ugwu, appealed to the government to create a supportive environment for their businesses to thrive.
The livestock census and accompanying reforms underline the Benue State Government’s commitment to resolving conflicts and fostering economic development through improved livestock management.
