On Thursday, the State High Court in Gboko, Benue State issued an order restraining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its upcoming congress in six local government areas, which was scheduled for Saturday, August 10, 2024.
The restraining order was granted by Justice J. M. Ayua following a motion ex parte presented to the court. The applicants in the case include Senator Orker Jev, Terseer Tsumba, Aondoyina Grace, Tergun Tsegba, and 13 others.
Counsels for the applicants, F.T. Anongo and G.M. Tyoh, sought the court’s intervention to stop the local government congresses until the party explains why the ward congress scheduled for July 27, 2024, was not held.
The local governments affected by the court order are Buruku, Gboko, Guma, Kwande, Ushongo, and Konshisha.
The respondents in the case are the Peoples Democratic Party, the acting National Chairman, the National Organising Secretary, and the Benue State chairman, John Ngbede.
The court’s order reads: “It’s hereby ordered that respondents, their agents, servants, or privies are restrained in the interim from conducting local government congress elections scheduled for 10/8/24 in only six local governments in Benue State.”
The motion on notice is set to be heard on August 18, 2024.
