Jonathan Vatsa, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, has called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Vatsa’s demand follows Akpabio’s alleged remark to hunger protesters, suggesting they could continue protesting as “we shall be eating.”
Although Akpabio has denied making the comment, Vatsa labeled the remark as insensitive and embarrassing for the ruling party. He criticized the statement as a reflection of a culture of “eating” associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), from which Akpabio originated.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Vatsa, a former Commissioner for Information in Niger State, insisted that Akpabio owes Nigerians an apology. He condemned the decision to appoint Akpabio as Senate President, arguing that it undermines the APC government’s credibility.
Vatsa stated, “It is a significant mistake and a disservice to the country to appoint someone like Akpabio as Senate President in the APC government. This is why the government struggles to make progress.”
He further claimed that the APC has been taken over by individuals rejected by Nigerians in 2015, who now continue to exploit their positions, as Akpabio’s remarks suggested. Vatsa emphasized that Akpabio, given his affiliation with the PDP-led Akwa Ibom State, should not hold the position of Senate President.
“This party needs to start rebuilding its image and restoring confidence among Nigerians ahead of 2027. This should begin with Akpabio’s resignation to show our commitment as a serious party,” Vatsa concluded.
