Allegations against Akpabio: Natasha’s office to be sealed, salary withheld – Senate

-

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, for six months following a series of confrontations with Senate leadership.

According to a statement signed by Kenny Okolugbo from the Communication and Strategy Department of the Office of the Senate President, the decision follows an altercation during a plenary session on February 20, 2025.

The dispute began when Akpoti-Uduaghan refused to move to her newly assigned seat, alleging an attempt to suppress her voice. Her heated exchange with Senate leaders disrupted proceedings and drew widespread media attention.

In response, the Senate referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, led by Senator Neda Imasuen, for investigation. After a two-week review, the committee determined that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions violated the Senate Standing Rules 2023, bringing the institution into disrepute.

Following the committee’s findings, the Senate approved a six-month suspension from all legislative activities. Her office will be sealed for the duration of the suspension, and her salary and allowances will be withheld. She has also been banned from entering the National Assembly premises while suspended.

Additionally, the Senate ruled that Akpoti-Uduaghan must submit a written apology for the suspension to be reconsidered or reduced.

Before her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan argued that her seat reassignment was an attempt to limit her visibility and influence in legislative proceedings. However, the Senate leadership insisted that she remained active and visible during sessions.

This development underscores the Senate’s commitment to enforcing its rules and maintaining order in the chamber. It also highlights the internal political tensions within Nigeria’s legislative body.

With her office sealed and salary withheld, the next steps for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remain uncertain. Political observers will be watching closely to see if she apologizes or challenges the suspension through other means.
