Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has called for a reform of Nigeria’s political class to rebuild public trust in leadership. Speaking at the 2024 reunion of former and current House of Representatives members in Abuja, Adebayo stressed the need for a political overhaul, urging leaders to demonstrate genuine commitment to serving the people.
Adebayo expressed concern that Nigerians view politicians as lacking principles and integrity, tarnishing the country’s image globally. He argued that the political class must be rehabilitated to restore the faith of the people.
“The people of Nigeria must believe in their leaders,” Adebayo stated, adding that Nigerians should feel proud to engage with their political leaders. He emphasized the importance of a respected political class for a country to gain international respect.
Adebayo also highlighted the urgency for stronger institutions, including a robust security system, judiciary, and civil service, to ensure a better future for the nation. He noted that in a country with high unemployment, many see politics as a self-serving career rather than a public service.
The event also featured remarks from Rt. Hon. Mulikat Adeola, the convener, and former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, who promised that such reunions would continue to focus on issues vital to nation-building and parliamentary effectiveness. The speakers underscored the importance of unity and constructive criticism in addressing the nation’s challenges.
