GreenPlinth Africa and the Lagos State Government have reaffirmed their commitment to integrating economic prosperity with global sustainability goals, marking a major step towards climate action and economictransformation in Nigeria.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, the stakeholders emphasized the significance of the “Clean Cooking Access for Africa: Leaving No One Behind” initiative. The ambitious project aims to address Nigeria’s clean cooking challenges while positioning the country as a leader in the global carbon compliance market.
At the heart of the initiative is the deployment of 80 million highly efficient, clean cookstoves nationwide, making it the world’s largest clean cooking project. The initiative is expected to generate over 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon offsets and create more than 3.5 million green jobs. It also seeks to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on traditional cooking fuels like wood, charcoal, and kerosene, providing a cleaner and healthier alternative for millions of households.
President & CEO of GreenPlinth Africa, Dr. Olawale Akinwumi, described the project’s launch as a historic move that would place Nigeria at the forefront of compliance carbon markets under the UNFCCC’s Article 6.4ER framework. He stressed that the initiative is not only an environmental breakthrough but also a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of women and children.
Lagos State Governor, represented at the event by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, underscored the importance of Africa’s participation in the global carbon economy. He stated that Lagos aims to set a new benchmark for subnational governments by pioneering green investments, decarbonizing public assets, and fostering a self-sustaining green economy.
Describing the initiative as a strategic approach to sustainable infrastructure and clean energy, he called for bold collaboration among government agencies, private sector players, development institutions, and civil society.
The implementation phase is set to begin in June 2025, with the first batch of clean cookstoves to be distributed in Makoko. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended the Office of Climate Change & Circular Economy, led by Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, and the Ministry of Economic Planning & Budget for their efforts in advancing the project. He also lauded GreenPlinth Africa for its innovative approach to climate adaptation, which balances local needs with Africa’s broader socio-economic growth.
