Timi of Edeland Clarifies Viral Video with Emir of Ilorin

-

The Palace of the Timi of Edeland, Oba Munirudeen Adeshola Lawal, has addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video showing the monarch greeting the Emir of Ilorin, Sulu Gambari, on bended knees.

In a statement by the Timi’s Media Assistant, Tijani Abdulraheem Adekilekun, the gesture was described as an act of respect in line with Yoruba customs, rather than a diminishment of the Timi’s throne.

“The Timi of Edeland bent to exchange pleasantries with the Emir due to the latter’s inability to stand, possibly because of age or health-related reasons,” the statement clarified.

The palace explained that the Emir remained seated while greeting all guests at the event, including Oba Lawal. The video, which has sparked widespread commentary, was said to have been misconstrued by viewers unfamiliar with the cultural context.

The palace emphasized the importance of cultural sensitivity and called for restraint in public discussions, urging respect for Yoruba traditions and customs.

Oba Lawal remains a respected figure in Yorubaland, and the palace reassured the public that his actions were consistent with traditional values. They also expressed gratitude for the support of the people and encouraged a focus on unity and respect for cultural heritage.
