The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the recent series of deadly stampedes across Nigeria linked to the distribution of rice, calling them a grim reflection of the country’s governance failures.
Reports indicate that 63 lives have been lost in separate incidents in Abuja, Anambra, and Oyo states.
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a scramble for rice claimed at least 10 lives, with several others hospitalized, according to the FCT Police Command. A similar tragedy occurred in Okija, Anambra State, where 22 residents perished during a rice distribution event. Meanwhile, in Ibadan, Oyo State, a stampede at a carnival led to the deaths of over 35 people, many of them children.
CUPP described the incidents as a “shameful indictment” of the nation’s leadership. Chief Peter Ameh, CUPP’s National Secretary, emphasized the irony of a country with 39.6 million hectares of arable land grappling with food insecurity.
“Nigeria, with vast agricultural resources, has the potential to feed not only its population but also export to the West African sub-region. Yet, citizens die struggling for a staple like rice,” Ameh stated.
He criticized the government for its failure to manage resources effectively, citing incompetence and corruption as key factors crippling the agricultural sector.
“These tragedies underscore the urgent need for reforms to ensure that basic necessities, like food, are accessible to all Nigerians,” he added.
The stampedes have sparked widespread calls for improved governance and immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
