2027: Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Hints at Governorship Bid, Criticises Lagos Spending

-

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, has signalled his intention to contest for the position again in 2027. He emphasised learning from past mistakes and strengthening his political movement as part of his strategy for the next election.

During a recent interview with Iyabo Ojo TV on YouTube, Rhodes-Vivour criticised the trend of political parties going silent after elections. He stated that his movement is actively learning from its shortcomings and maintaining visibility to strengthen opposition efforts.

“In Lagos politics, after elections, the opposition goes quiet. That will not happen this time. We are working and learning from our mistakes,” he explained.

Rhodes-Vivour took aim at Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, accusing it of extravagant spending amid widespread hardship.

He alleged instances of financial mismanagement, including:

  • Payment of personal legal bills using taxpayer money.
  • Spending almost ₦200 million on unspecified projects.
  • An expenditure of ₦2 billion for purchasing fans and engaging consultants for bus networks.

According to Rhodes-Vivour, such spending highlights the need for accountability and transparency from government officials.

“We need to ensure that our money is used efficiently, especially given the suffering that Nigerians and Lagosians are currently experiencing,” he added.

The Labour Party candidate highlighted his efforts to engage with Lagos residents through social initiatives. He mentioned health outreach programs and micro-health insurance plans, offering free treatment worth up to ₦6,000 to vulnerable citizens.

“We’re in people’s faces, reaching out through health programmes and offering free treatments. Our micro-health insurance plan is our way of ensuring health support to those who need it most,” he said.

Rhodes-Vivour’s statement suggests that he remains committed to grassroots engagement and sustainable policy initiatives as he prepares for the 2027 governorship elections. His focus on transparency and addressing citizens’ immediate needs could shape his campaign strategy as he positions himself for another shot at leadership.

This announcement comes as opposition parties ramp up strategies in preparation for the 2027 elections amid concerns about governance, economic hardship, and citizens’ expectations for improved public service delivery.
