The Nigerian Senate has reshuffled its 10-man committee tasked with meeting the Presidency to resolve issues surrounding the Tax Reform Bills. Initially formed on Wednesday, the committee included Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North), Adamu Ailero (PDP, Kebbi Central), Orji Kalu (APC, Abia North), Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), Titus Zam (APC, Benue South), Abdullahi Yahaya (PDP, Kebbi North), Adeola Olamilekan (APC, Ogun West), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), and Abbah Moro (PDP, Benue), who serves as the committee’s chairman.
However, on Thursday, the Senate announced that Monguno would be removed from the committee, with Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) replacing him with Senator Shehu Kaka (APC, Borno Central). Despite this reshuffle, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) remains the committee’s chairman.
The committee, which includes members like Ailero, Kalu, Dickson, Zam, Yahaya, Olamilekan, Musa, and Abiru, is responsible for addressing contentious aspects of the Tax Reform Bills, which had been criticized following their submission by President Bola Tinubu. The Senate had previously suspended legislative action on the bills, but they have now decided to hold a public hearing on the matter. The committee is tasked with meeting the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to discuss the unresolved issues in the bills.
Meanwhile, the Senate has instructed its Finance Committee to halt further actions on the tax bills, which had already passed the second reading last week.
