Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his position on the Tax Reform Bills. Kwankwaso called on Tinubu to prioritize the interests of Nigerians amid the prevailing economic hardships.
In a post shared on his X handle, the former NNPP presidential candidate cited past examples of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan withdrawing critical bills for the nation’s benefit.
“My stance on tax reform is clear,” Kwankwaso stated. “Now is not the right time to review VAT or introduce new taxes. With the economic challenges many Nigerians face, such measures would be ill-timed and burdensome.”
He emphasized that the government should focus on providing relief rather than imposing additional financial stress on citizens. Kwankwaso also urged Tinubu to follow the National Economic Council’s advice and consider the broader public good rather than personal motives.
Citing historical precedents, Kwankwaso mentioned Obasanjo’s withdrawal of the revenue-sharing bill during his second term and Jonathan’s decision to pull back a key communication to the 7th National Assembly, both in the nation’s best interest.
In conclusion, Kwankwaso appealed for Tinubu to listen to the voices of Nigerians and withdraw the Tax Reform Bills to avoid further hardship.
