A tragic boat accident in Beneth Island, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West local government area of Delta State has claimed the lives of over 30 passengers, including a one-year-old toddler. The incident occurred over the weekend when a speedboat, carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony, collided with a submerged log, causing it to capsize.
The collision sent many passengers into the water, with most unable to swim or wearing life jackets. Eyewitnesses described the boat as traveling at high speed before the tragic accident. Survivors and witnesses have shared harrowing accounts of passengers struggling to stay afloat amid the chaos.
While search and rescue operations are ongoing, many passengers remain missing, and the recovery of the toddler’s body hours after the incident brought further grief. The fate of the other passengers is still uncertain as rescue teams continue to comb the area.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, stated that more information would be released once the full details of the incident are gathered. As time passes, hopes of finding survivors are diminishing.
