The leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues as the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, crucial for resolving issues within the party, has once again been postponed. This marks the latest setback in the attempt to replace the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, following the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu.
The NEC meeting, initially set for August 15, was first delayed to October 24, then again to November 28, and most recently indefinitely postponed. The party cited the funeral of the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, as the reason for the delay. However, this has sparked discontent within the party, with some members alleging that Damagum’s leadership is deliberately being extended until the next national convention in 2025.
Stakeholders from the North Central zone have criticized the postponements, claiming they violate the PDP’s constitution and hinder the party’s progress. Former National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan warned that without leadership change, efforts to “fix” the PDP would be futile.
Meanwhile, House of Representatives member Ikenga Ugochinyere accused the Damagum-led NWC of secretly meeting with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), fueling concerns of an impending merger. Ugochinyere warned of the disastrous consequences of such actions, calling for immediate action against those engaging in anti-party activities.
Party chieftain Austin Okai highlighted the internal power struggles, accusing PDP governors of prioritizing their 2027 ambitions over the party’s unity. Okai stressed that while governors are vocal about removing Damagum, they are yet to take decisive action.
Despite these tensions, the PDP Governors’ Forum has advised the NWC to convene the NEC meeting by February 2025, to allow for necessary consultations and address ongoing leadership issues. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State conveyed this recommendation, emphasizing the need to resolve internal conflicts before the party can focus on future electoral success.
