Edo Queens Face Semifinal Hurdle After Goalless Draw Against FC Masar

-

Edo Queens’ path to the semifinals in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League remains uncertain after a tense 0-0 draw against Egypt’s FC Masar in their second Group B match in Morocco on Wednesday.

The Nigerian champions currently top Group B with four points, sharing the lead with Masar. Mamelodi Sundowns sit in third with three points after a decisive 4-0 win over CBE. To advance, Edo Queens need at least a draw against Sundowns in their final group match on Saturday at Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Casablanca. A loss, however, could eliminate them if Masar defeats CBE in the group’s other match.

Sundowns, having rebounded from a surprising 1-0 defeat to Masar, are now in strong form and ready for Saturday’s crucial encounter against the Queens, as they aim to continue their title defense.

Edo Queens are the third Nigerian club to compete in this continental tournament, following Rivers Angels in 2021 and Bayelsa Queens in 2022, with Bayelsa holding Nigeria’s highest placement, finishing third.
