The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command has dismantled a suspected camp of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area.
During the operation, 29 suspects—25 males and four females—were arrested in connection with the proscribed group. Various arms and ammunition were also seized.
The raid followed the earlier arrest of Anukuru Nnanna Emmanuel, 25, on September 15, 2024, in the Mgbidi community, Oru West. His confessions led to the discovery and destruction of the camp.
ASP Henry Okoye, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, stated, “The operation was initiated after the arrest of Emmanuel, a key suspect. His confessions enabled us to locate and dismantle the camp. Dangerous items were recovered, including four pump-action guns, two locally-made revolvers, five locally-made pistols, three AK-47 magazines, a Point of Sale (POS) machine, 20 live cartridges, a white SUV, and local bulletproof charms. Over N200,000, allegedly extorted from kidnapping victims, was also seized.”
Okoye emphasized that investigations are ongoing, particularly to identify the manufacturers of the locally-made weapons. “This operation is part of the Command’s efforts to combat violent crimes and restore peace in the State,” he added.
The police urged citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities, reassuring them that public safety remains a top priority.
