The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has launched several committees aimed at tackling the escalating insecurity in Northern Nigeria. This initiative was established following a resolution made during the ACF’s Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting on September 4, 2024.
According to a statement from the ACF’s national publicity secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the Unity, Peace, and Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Alhaji (Dr.) Yayale Ahmed, has been tasked with proposing realistic strategies to promote harmony and dialogue among Northern communities. This initiative is a response to the deteriorating inter-group relations in the region, which have hindered peaceful coexistence and development.
Additionally, Lt. General Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), the former Chief of Army Staff, will lead a second committee focused on security issues. This group is responsible for devising actionable solutions to address the ongoing insecurity that has severely affected lives and livelihoods in the region. Alhaji Mohammed D. Abubakar, a former Inspector General of Police, will serve as the deputy for this committee.
The ACF Publicity Secretary also noted that the committees were inaugurated in Abuja on September 30 and October 1, respectively, by Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu and Wazirin Dutse. They are expected to submit their reports by mid-November, which will be reviewed by the ACF. Following this, the ACF will collaborate with Northern state governors and federal agencies to ensure the implementation of the recommendations.
