Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, conducted another round of assessments on vital infrastructure damaged by the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri and surrounding areas. The flood, which occurred on September 10, has been labeled the worst in Maiduguri in over three decades.
During his assessment, Zulum visited several critical locations, including Gwange Maternity, various road networks, and bridges in Fori, Moro-Moro, and Gwange. The governor expressed concern about the extent of the destruction, attributing much of the damage to homes built along the riverbanks, which obstructed the flow of water from River Ngada.
Zulum remarked, “The quantum of the destruction was enormous, and you can see we had just visited one place. It is unfortunate that some people choose to build houses right inside the waterways, which obstructed the water passage. Otherwise, the water could have passed onto the lowland without affecting the main city.”
The flooding has caused significant damage, isolating communities and disrupting the movement of essential goods.
This disaster has highlighted the urgent need for proper urban planning and measures to prevent further damage from future floods.
