Ijaw Youth Council Vows to Prevent Disruption of Rivers LG Election

-

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has pledged to ensure that the Rivers State local government election, scheduled for Saturday, October 5, proceeds without any disruptions.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday, IYC President Dr. Theophilus Alaye emphasized the importance of the election, noting that Governor Siminalayi Fubara aims to strengthen grassroots governance and deliver the dividends of democracy.

“As Ijaw youths, we won’t allow any individual or group to disrupt the upcoming local government elections,” Alaye stated. He underscored the contributions of the Ijaw people to the country, stressing their support for Governor Fubara.

Alaye expressed concern over conflicting court judgments aimed at halting the election, calling it “unfortunate.” He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act independently and support the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) in conducting a credible election.

The IYC also advised judges handling sensitive cases to remain impartial, warning against political influence that could lead to chaos. Alaye noted that no court ruling has ever prevented national or state elections from taking place, emphasizing the need for consistency in judicial decisions.
