Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary kicked off on Sunday with an inter-denominational church service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja. The event saw attendance from key figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the Service Chiefs, alongside other dignitaries.
George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), led the government delegation and expressed optimism for Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. He emphasized that despite current challenges, he envisions Nigeria becoming the most successful and prosperous nation in Africa and beyond.
“Today, September 29, I have a dream that this nation, Nigeria, will be great again. I have a dream that Nigeria will rise again. I have a dream that Nigeria will be a pacesetter for industrialisation in Africa. I have a dream that all Nigerians will dwell in plenty,” said Archbishop Michael Akinwale, who delivered a sermon of hope during the service.
Echoing this sentiment, Akume stated, “There is hope. I have a dream too, that this country, under Asiwaju, will become the most blessed, most successful, and prosperous in Africa and the world.”
Senate President Akpabio urged patience and hope among Nigerians, affirming that the journey to prosperity has only just begun. “Yes, the road ahead may be bumpy; yes, there will be setbacks; but together, united in our faith and love for Nigeria, we will prevail,” he asserted.
In Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah called for unity and inclusive national economic development during a special church service at the Government House Chapel. He noted that Nigeria’s 64th anniversary is a testament to the resilience of its people.
Mbah urged citizens to support President Tinubu and other leaders to achieve the nation’s economic aspirations. “We are making steady progress. Perhaps we need to think about ways to deploy disruptive innovation to leapfrog some of the developmental challenges we face,” he stated.
Fr. Wilfred Agubuchie, the Diocesan Secretary/Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, called on political and business leaders to work for the common good of the people.
