Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced a collaboration with the United States government to promote press freedom and tackle fake news in the country. The partnership was discussed during a meeting between Idris and U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills.
In the meeting, Idris highlighted the Nigerian government’s commitment to maintaining a free press, recognizing that press freedom is crucial for a functioning democracy. He acknowledged challenges in the sector but reassured that steps are being taken to ensure continued media independence.
The discussion also touched on addressing the growing issues of misinformation and disinformation. Both parties agreed on the importance of combating fake news to build a strong and informed society.
Ambassador Mills praised the efforts of the Nigerian government in upholding press freedom and stressed the need for collaboration to counter the negative impact of disinformation, which poses a threat to democracies worldwide.
