The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has raised concerns over the growing hunger and insecurity suffocating Nigerians, calling on the Federal Government to take decisive action. Speaking at the consecration of seven new bishops and the presentation of four new archbishops in Enugu, Rt. Rev. Israel Okoye, Bishop of Ihiala, criticized the government for allowing greed to turn Nigeria’s blessings into curses.
Bishop Okoye decried the mismanagement of Nigeria’s wealth, especially its crude oil resources, accusing those in power of enriching themselves while the majority of citizens suffer in poverty and fear. He expressed frustration over the seeming indifference of the government to the increasing loss of life due to insecurity, noting that “people are being killed like animals” with little being done to address the crisis.
He highlighted how corruption has infiltrated all levels of society, including among those who profess to be Christians. He urged the newly consecrated bishops to remain steadfast in their faith and lead with integrity, reminding them of their responsibility to uphold the unity and discipline of the church.
The newly consecrated bishops include Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel Ike (Enugu Diocese), Rt. Rev. Ephraim Gongdem (Jos Diocese), and Rt. Rev. Godwin Odubena (Ijebu North Diocese), among others. The new archbishops include Most Rev. Sosthenes Eze for Enugu Province and Most Rev. Williams Aladekugbe for Ibadan Province.
Primate of the Church, Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba, emphasized the need for the bishops to be compassionate and merciful shepherds, guiding their flock with discipline while showing mercy. The enthronement of the new Bishop of Enugu, Rt. Rev. Ike, is scheduled for Sunday.
