A recent visit by former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked confusion and conflicting statements from both parties. According to Bello’s media team, the former governor voluntarily visited the EFCC after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies to address allegations of money laundering totaling ₦80.2 billion.
However, the EFCC swiftly denied that Bello was in their custody. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated, “Reports that Yahaya Bello is in the EFCC’s holding facility are incorrect. Bello remains wanted by the Commission with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”
This incident follows the EFCC’s declaration in April 2024, when Bello was accused of resisting multiple invitations and arrest attempts. EFCC operatives had reportedly stormed his residence, resulting in a stalemate that required reinforcement from the police and DSS. Amid the tension, Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State arrived at the scene, sparking rumors that Bello was attempting to escape in the governor’s vehicle.
Since that April incident, Bello had not made any public appearances. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede later revealed that personal efforts were made to encourage Bello to respond to the money laundering investigation, but the former governor declined, suggesting EFCC operatives come to his village instead.
Despite Bello’s media team emphasizing his respect for the rule of law and commitment to clearing his name, there remains uncertainty about his interaction with EFCC officials during this recent visit. According to the media office, Bello was not interrogated and left the EFCC premises accompanied by Governor Ododo.
With the case still ongoing in court, many are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds. Bello’s camp maintains that he has nothing to hide, while the EFCC continues to pursue him for alleged financial misconduct during his time in office.
