X Faces Suspension Risk in Brazil After 24-Hour Court Deadline

-

Judge Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court has given X, formerly Twitter, a 24-hour ultimatum to appoint a legal representative in Brazil or face potential service suspension.

This decision comes amid heightened tensions between X and the court over issues related to content moderation and alleged misinformation. Recently, X disclosed that de Moraes had threatened to arrest the company’s attorney, prompting the departure of its remaining staff in Brazil.

The court issued the notice through its global government affairs account, warning X of a suspension if the order is not complied with.

The conflict underscores a clash between differing approaches to free speech. While the US Constitution guarantees broad free speech protections, Brazil’s legal framework allows for more stringent restrictions.

In April, de Moraes began investigations into X’s owner, Elon Musk, over allegations of spreading fake news and potential involvement in incitement and criminal organizations.

Brazil’s political right criticizes de Moraes, accusing him of overstepping his authority to limit free speech. Conversely, his supporters argue that his actions are necessary to protect democratic values.
