Olabode George, the former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has advised Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to defer his presidential aspirations until 2031. George argues that a southerner should occupy the presidency from 2023 to 2031, aligning with the party’s constitutional and political expectations.
In his statement, George highlighted that Atiku, who will be 81 in 2027, should follow the example set by U.S. President Joe Biden. Biden’s decision to allow younger leaders to step forward is, according to George, a mark of statesmanship. He suggests that Atiku should adopt a similar approach to ensure the PDP fields a southern candidate in 2027.
George emphasized that following the recent eight-year term of Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, the presidency should be held by a southerner in 2027. He referred to the PDP’s constitutional principle of zoning and rotation, which mandates fair distribution of power between the northern and southern regions.
George dismissed allegations of tribalism, asserting his commitment to the PDP and his respect for its foundational principles. He urged the party to adhere strictly to the zoning and rotation principles established since its inception in 1998, stressing that these principles are crucial for maintaining justice, fairness, and equity within the party and the nation.
He concluded by asserting that while he respects Atiku and acknowledges his contributions, the party must prioritize its constitutional guidelines to avoid potential internal and national discord.
