In a notable display of unity, the Enigie (Dukes) and Ohen from various deities loyal to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, have endorsed Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, for the upcoming election.
The endorsement was announced by Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo, Director of Publicity for the APC Edo Governorship Campaign Council. The decision was made during a meeting between Edo South APC leaders and Benin Palace officials on August 25, 2024, in Benin City.
His Royal Highness Festus Osagiede, Enogie of Iguogie Dukedom in Ovia North East Local Government Area and coordinator of Enigie in Edo South, led the endorsement. He explained that the support for Senator Okpebholo and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, was driven by a commitment to uphold the dignity of the Benin Palace and its king.
“We are firmly behind the APC,” Osagiede declared. “As loyal children of the Oba of Benin, we respect the palace and will not allow anyone to undermine it. Governor Godwin Obaseki has previously used some Enigie to attack the palace, but we refuse to tolerate such disrespect.”
Osagiede emphasized that despite Governor Obaseki’s substantial power and immunity, it pales in comparison to the reverence for Oba Ewuare. He expressed the collective resolve of the Enigie to support candidates who will contribute to the development of Edo State and honor the Oba’s legacy.
In his statement, Osagiede drew on the legendary strength of ‘Akpakomiza,’ expressing confidence that Senator Okpebholo, also known by this moniker, would be a vigorous advocate for the Benin people. “With ‘Akpakomiza’ back, he will fight this battle for us! Oba ghato Okpere,” he affirmed.
This endorsement signifies a significant shift in political dynamics in Edo South as the APC prepares for the forthcoming elections.
