Nigeria and the United States are collaborating on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in military operations to bolster security and stability. This collaboration was highlighted by Mallory Stewart, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability (ADS) at the U.S. Department of State, during a roundtable session with journalists in Abuja.
Stewart explained that the goal of this partnership is to align efforts in supporting regional stability and security. She emphasized the importance of hearing Nigeria’s perspectives, particularly in shaping the responsible use of AI in military contexts. This effort is part of a broader initiative by the U.S., which involves working with 55 other countries to develop a political declaration on the responsible application of AI in military operations.
Stewart acknowledged that while AI has the potential to enhance military capabilities, it also introduces challenges and risks, which the U.S. has encountered through its own experiences. The collaboration aims to ensure that Nigeria and other countries can benefit from AI while minimizing potential risks, leveraging the lessons learned by the U.S.
The discussions with Nigerian officials, including representatives from ECOWAS, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, civil society, and the National Security Adviser, are part of ongoing efforts to include Nigeria’s voice in the global dialogue on AI in military operations. The U.S. hopes that Nigeria will take a leading role in appreciating the challenges and opportunities that AI presents in the military domain.
This collaboration underscores the commitment of both nations to work together in addressing the complexities of integrating AI into military operations, with a focus on ensuring that these technologies are used responsibly and effectively.
