The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political group, Afenifere, has called for a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s security structure to promote peace and national progress.
During a meeting held on Tuesday at the residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State, Afenifere expressed concern over the escalating insecurity across the nation. The organization particularly condemned the recent kidnapping of medical students in Benue State and urged the federal government to take decisive action to protect citizens and their property.
In a statement released after the meeting, Afenifere expressed approval of the recent Supreme Court ruling that granted autonomy to local governments in the country.
The communique stated, “The nation’s security framework requires a thorough overhaul to ensure that Nigerians can live and move freely without the fear of abduction or harassment. This reformation should include accelerating the establishment of state police.”
The group emphasized the importance of integrating modern technology into efforts to combat banditry and terrorism, which they believe would significantly reduce instances of kidnapping and related crimes.
Afenifere also called for the licensing of Amotekun, a regional security outfit, to carry lethal weapons, advocating for better collaboration between Amotekun and other security agencies. The group suggested the establishment of command and control centers in every local government area to facilitate real-time information sharing, similar to practices in developed and developing countries.
Addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, Afenifere urged the Federal Government to implement measures that would strengthen the national currency, enhance productivity, reduce costs of goods and services, and ultimately improve the welfare of the people.
The group also highlighted the strategic role of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and independent oil marketers in the oil sector, urging them to prioritize the nation’s interests in their operations.
Regarding local government autonomy, Afenifere encouraged local councils to revive past practices, such as supporting local farmers through subsidized resources, to boost food production and the local economy.
Finally, Afenifere reiterated its call for the restructuring of the country, urging President Bola Tinubu to leverage his democratic and federalist credentials to expedite the achievement of true federalism in Nigeria.
